Many of our patients come in complaining of pain in the ball of the foot. Medically, this is referred to as “Metatarsalgia”.

Causes

  • Capsulitis
    • Inflammation of the area surrounding the small joints in the ball of the foot can create significant pain while a patient is walking.
  • Neuroma
    • An enlarged nerve in the foot can send shooting and burning sensations from the ball of the foot to the toes.
  • Plantar Plate Tear
    • A chronic or acute tear of a ligament that goes from the ball of the foot to the toes causes pain when putting pressure on the ball of the foot or flexing the toes upwards.
  • Elongated Metatarsal
    • Sometimes people have a longer bone than normal in their foot, which is an anatomic variant. This can create pressure and pain on the ball of the foot.
  • Calluses
    • Twisting motions while walking or bones in the feet that cause pressure points can create painful lesions on the ball of the foot.

Treatments for this kind of pain depends on what is causing the condition. a podiatrist can diagnose the problem, and will treat accordingly. Treatmant includes shaving down calluses to relieve pressure, padding to offload painful areas, cortisone injections, an NSAIDs to decrease inflammation. Proper shoegear will be recommended, as well as possibly recommending custom foot orthotics. If conservative treatment fails, surgical correction of the deformity would be warranted.
