A traditional flip flip is a sandal with a flat sole and “Y” shaped straps that hold the shoe to the foot. This is a common choice of footwear in warmer climates and during the summer months.

The lack of support in flip flops is where the issue lies. Many painful foot problems stem from prolonged wearing of this form of shoe.

  • Plantar fasciitis is caused by the excessive pull of the plantar fascia, an arch-supporting ligament, causing pain and inflammation at the heel.

  • Achilles tendinitis is caused by poor mechanics of the foot, leading to overstretching of the tendon. This sometimes leads to bone spurs.

  • Hammertoes can also be caused by prolonged use of this shoe, because the small strap of this sandle puts pressure on the toes to hold the foot in the shoe.

When purchasing summer shoegear, look for sandals with arch support, heel cushioning, and study straps to hold the shoe onto your foot.

Unfortunately, the conditions discussed above can turn into chronic problems, that may require treatment by a podiatrist.
