What is Pes Cavus?

A high in the foot that makes the sole of the foot look particularly hollow when bearing weight. The foot appears to have a “High in-step”.

Symptoms

High arches may cause no symptoms at all and be a painless foot type for some people. Others, however, can develop ailments that need to be treated by a podiatrist.

  • Heel pain
    • Plantar fasiciitis
    • Bursitis
    • Stress fracture
  • Ball of foot pain
    • Calluses
    • Neuroma
    • Inflammation of Joint capsules
  • Toe pain
    • Hammertoes
    • Bunions

Causes

Genetics/heredity play a major role in foot type, and many people in the same family often have high arches.

In other cases, certain neuromuscular and orthopedic disorders can cause a foot to develop a rigid high arch.

  • Stroke
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Charcot Marie Tooth
  • Friedrich’s Ataxia

Treatment

Conservative treatment includes proper fitting shoes, custom orthotic shoe inserts, and padding of feet to offload pressure points.

In more severe cases in which the patient cannot subsist with conservative treatment, surgery may be indicated.

  • Soft tissue releases
  • Fusions
  • Osteotomies (Cutting and realigning bones)
