What is a Jones Fracture?

A Jones fracture refers to a break between the base and shaft of the fifth metatarsal bone of the foot. The fifth metatarsal is the long bone on the outside of the foot. It is connected to the smallest toe.

Symptoms

Symptoms include bruising, pain, and swelling of the outer part of the foot after a fall. Patient may be unable to put any weight on the injured foot.

Diagnosis

Your doctor will first examine you, and then take an Xray. The Xray will show a fracture at a specific location in the fifth metatarsal bone.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the severity of the broken bone, age of the patient, activity level and overall health.

If conservative treatment is chosen, a hard cast or walking boot will be applied for 6-8 weeks until bony healing is seen on Xray.

If surgical treatment is warranted, then plates, screws, and/or pins are utilized to fixate the fracture fragments. Patients will wear a hard cast or walking boot for approximately 4-6 weeks.

The doctors at Innovative Foot and Ankle are all licensed podiatrists who are trained in the conservative and surgical management of 5th metatarsal fractures. Visit one of our four offices if you have suffered a fall and are worried about a possible fracture.
